Outstanding finish for BSG Elite Athlete Chris Felgate at the 2012 Ilheus ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup
BSG Elite Triathlete Chris Felgate achieved a 6th place finish at the 2012 Ilheus ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup, which took place in Brazil on Saturday the 7th of April.
The competitive field consisted of 23 of the world’s top triathletes from countries including Brazil, Ecuador, USA, Ireland, Argentina and Colombia - with Chris Felgate being the only African contender in the line-up.
The event began with a mass beach start as the athletes raced into the warm waters to begin their 2 lap ocean swim. The cycle leg followed, which consisted of 6 laps of a rather technical but flat course along the downtown streets of Ilheus, and finally finishing with a 4 lap flat run along the shore line.
The race was dominated by Argentina’s Luciano Taccone and Gonzalo Raul Tellechea, who took the gold and silver respectively. The leaders were closely followed by USA athletes Gregory Billington and Ethan Brown finishing in third and fourth position, with Colombian athlete Carlos Javier Quinchara Forero rounding off the top five.
Chris crossed the finish line in 6th position with a time of 1 hour 53 minutes and 54 seconds. “I was very happy with the result given the hot and humid racing conditions,” Chris commented, post event. This outstanding finish puts him one step closer to achieving his dreams of qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics – this will be his second appearance at the Olympic Games.
All Triathletes have until the 31st of May 2012 to earn sufficient points in order to qualify for the London Olympics. The NOCs (National Olympic Committees) have to inform the ITU which athletes will be representing their respective countries at the Olympic Games by the 22nd of June 2012.
