Name: Kate Roberts

Years in sport: 10
Overall Top 3 Placements in 2010 to date:
- 4th Place Hamburg World Championships Series
- 6th Place Sydney World Championships Series
- 6th Place Kitzbuhel World Championships Series
Goal for 2011 Season:
I'm planning to podium in at least one World Championships Series race and improve on my number 7 world rank from 2010.
Long term goal:
Scarily it's not actually that long term anymore, but the London Olympics next year is my ultimate goal in triathlon. Longer than that, I aim to be doing what makes me happy in life and living with no regrets... at this stage it's exciting to think that I don't know what that will be!
Most preferred discipline in the sport and why:
I would say swimming and running, as they are activities I have partaken in my whole life and cannot imagine a day going by without at least one of them. Although in triathlon, that covers two thirds of my sport so if pressed I'd say running as it allows me to clear my mind the best and just enjoy myself.
Weekly Training Volume:
To be honest it feels like I'm focused and fulltime committed to triathlon 170 hours a week! Ok, there aren't even that many hours in a week, but it feels like it. Once I break down swimming, cycling, running, gym work and other technical drills, it ends up working out to around 30 hours a week of physical activity.
Do you stick to a specific diet?
Absolutely. Nutrition is so important to my well-being and a healthy balanced diet is another weapon in my training arsenal for sure. Even when I'm not in heavy training phases of the year I still eat healthily simply because I feel better. My daily meals include lots of fruit, veggies, meat, fish, dairy and muesli... not all together though, that would be mental.
One tip for beginners
Make sure you never lose that love and excitement for the sport. The harder you train and the further you progress, the more you find that your social life is harder to keep exciting (or even existent) because all your energy is spent on training and racing. The only way to manage this well is by realising that the time you spend training is usually the best part of your day.
Sporting Icon:
Steffi Graph and Haile Gebrselassie. (you only asked for one but I couldn't split them).
Favourite pastime:
I know this is a common one for triathletes but I'd have to say sleeping is up there. There is something just so appealing about inactivity to someone who is forced to be energetic for a living! Second to that I'd list: listening to music, eating, watching movies and reading... sometimes I do all these activities simultaneously because they're so awesome.
Favourite movie:
The Sound of Music and Million Dollar Baby. Once again I gave two answers, but if they could somehow morph these two plots into the one film then I'm sure that would be my all-time singular favourite film.
What music are you listening to now:
Right now I'm sitting in my room with the radio on and they're playing some random Aussie shoe warehouse advertisement jingle, so technically I'd say that isn't music... but in general terms and not in this exact moment as I'm sure the question was implying I'm really into the Aussie rock band Powderfinger. They feature big time on my running iPod!
Favourite food:
Hmm that's a hard one... see I've just answered that nutrition question above preaching about how important a healthy diet is, but now that you ask, I love a bit of junk food! I can't go past good banana bread, koeksisters, biltong, spaghetti bolognaise and a cheesy calzone pizza. Again with the seemingly recurring theme... not all on the same plate (that would be mental).
