Swim
Goggles, silicone cap, costume and/or tri-suit and wetsuit are essential items.
TYR is a brand that is synonymous with triathlon in the USA and is growing in popularity in South Africa. The middle-of-the-range TYR Fusion triathlon race suit contains hydrophobic material, which repels water, ensuring you go through the water much faster! TYR also offers an entry-level race suit that is made of lycra.
One of the fastest triathlon swimmers in the world, Andy Potts, has endorsed the TYR Hurricane range of wetsuits. The BSG Elite Team will be using the Hurricane C5 this year; while TYR's most popular range is the C3. Both classes of wetsuit contain Yamamoto SCS rubber which is very flexible while soft and comfortable inside.
Cycle
A bicycle, helmet and running or triathlon-specific shoes are essential. If you are more advanced in your training, going for a road bike such as the Black Spade Racing range is the best option. If you are a beginner, it may be better to start on a mountain bike as your position is less 'aggressive.'
The Shimano TR51s are the most popular 'clip in/cleat' triathlon specific shoes, as they contain one Velcro strap allowing a fast and easy entry into the shoe. The carbon sole allows incredible stiffness while still ensuring power transfer to ensure you move forward in as short a time as possible.
Glasses are advisable for eye safety. The Rudy Project Sportmask Performance or Noyz Fluro racing glasses are ideal options for bike and run stages.
Socks are also less important but if you prefer comfort, it will be better to put on a pair in the transition area.
Note: If you did not wear a triathlon race suit in the swim, you will need to wear a vest or t-shirt for the run. This will be put on in the transition area. Wear a quick-wic vest or t-shirt as this will be easier to get on as it does not absorb water.
Run
Running shoes and peak caps are essential items. Ensure your running shoes are worn in before you race to prevent blisters.
The Asics DS Racers, Gel Noosa Racers and Piranha running shoes are some of the best shoes to wear in a triathlon race due to their support and light weight.
You will still have socks on from the bicycle stage (if you put them on in the first transition) so this will save time in the second transition from bike to run. It is advisable to see a physiotherapist or podiatrist to advise you on the correct kind of running shoe that is specific to your needs.
